Roman Empire - Gallienus in the joint reign with his father Valerian I (late 253-260 A.D.).
Silver hybrid (Volusian reverse) antoninianus (2,63 g. 20 mm.), Rome mint, ending 253 or 254 A.D.
IMP C P LIC GALLIENVS AVG - Radiated and cuirassed bust of Gallienus to right.
P M TR P IIII COS II Emperor, togate, to left, sacrificing at altar.
This is a very very rare hybrid antoninianus with the obverse of the first Gallienus antoninianus series (VIRTVS AVGG) minted in Rome early in 254 but with the Volusian reverse RIC. IV 141 (Rome mint, 5th officina. 5th emission, summer AD 253). Obviously and so strange, this reverse die survived the three months of Aemilian period!!! So, it was wrongly used in this coin early in 254 instead of be destroyed as normally happen!!!
Probably unique, no other similar coin in any archive have been found. Good very fine condition in general, the reverse a little better. Some of the original luster still remains in reverse areas specially. Absolutely and extremely rare!!!
