Roman Empire - Constantine II (317-337 A.D.) - AE follis (2.54 g. 18 mm.) Siscia. AD 334-335 A.D.
Curious die hammer hit of a barbarous Magnentius AE bronze on the following official roman follis:
CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C, laureate head right /
GLORIA EXERCITVS, two soldiers standing facing one another, spear in outer hand, inner hand on shield resting on ground; between them two standards. Ex. •ЄSIS•
RIC. 236. p. 455 VOL. VII
The Magnentius bust if almost complete with the A letter behind but the Constantine II legend is practically readable at 100 x 100!!! The same case in the reverse when we can found not only the GLORIA EXERCITVS legend but also the mint mark in perfect condition!!! Excellent and very interesting sample of how barbarian tribes in Germany or Gaul used roman official series in order to prepare their (in this case Magnentius copies) own coinage making copies from the normal circulation types they received or used.
In addition, the coin was cleaned from our restoration type and you can see the after cleaning condition of the coin when it was hard to see what really the coin was hidding inside!!
Good very fine condition in general and a nice brown-red patina after the cleaning!
