Like M. Junius Brutus, and often misteken for him, Decimus Junius Albinus Brutus belonged to the gens Junia. He was adopted by Aulus Postumius Albinus whose name he added to his own. Decimus Brutus belonged to the inner circle of Caesar's supporters. He had joined him already during the Gallic War and Caesar entrusted him with a special command against Vercingetorix, the chieftain of the Arveni and leader of the Gauls. During the Civil War between Pompey and Caesar, Decimus Brutus was actively involved. Brutus was so close to Caesar that he was designated in the latter's will as his heir in case something would happen to Octavianus, his true heir
